Torre Annunziata and the neighboring community of Boscotrecase are mourning the tragic death of 18-year-old Paolo Lettieri, who reportedly lost his life in a road accident on Sunday morning, August 16. Paolo was traveling by scooter on Via Avallone, behind the Giraud Stadium in Torre Annunziata, Naples, when his scooter collided with a car. The impact was reportedly severe. Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, but sadly, there was nothing they could do to save him.
Carabinieri officers are investigating the circumstances of the crash. Their work will focus on reconstructing the sequence of events and determining whether any responsibility can be established. Paolo worked as a lifeguard and was looking forward to the remainder of the summer, his job, and the plans he had for the future. In September, he was expected to begin his fifth and final year at the Pitagora-Croce sports science high school.
Beyond his studies and work, Paolo was passionate about basketball. He played for Basketorre, where his coach, Iolanda Tessitore, remembered him with deep affection, describing him as an exceptional young man and a talented athlete whose loss has devastated the team. He was also registered with ASD Mamba Gragnano Basket and was expected to begin the new season with the club in the coming weeks. The organization expressed its sorrow, saying the team had been looking forward to welcoming him and seeing him wear its colors.
Paolo’s death has sent shockwaves through the local communities where he was known and loved. According to 2025 Istat-Aci road-safety data cited in the report, Italy recorded 2,868 road deaths, a 5.3% decrease from the previous year. However, deaths among 18- and 19-year-olds reportedly increased from 78 to 87, highlighting continuing concerns about road safety among young people. Paolo’s family, friends, teammates, classmates, and colleagues are now left to remember a promising young life tragically cut short.
