Lainey Scroggs, a 13-year-old cheerleader and rising eighth-grade student at Bedford Junior High School, has died following a medical emergency, leaving her family, friends, classmates, teammates, and the wider Michigan community mourning her sudden loss.
Lainey died Wednesday, according to Bedford Public Schools. The school district described her as a cherished and vibrant member of the community, a beloved cheerleader, daughter, sister, and friend who had formed meaningful connections with many people.
Lainey’s sudden passing has been especially difficult for those who knew her as she prepared to begin eighth grade. Her absence will be felt throughout Bedford Junior High School and the cheerleading community, where she was remembered for the place she held among her teammates and friends.
Following the heartbreaking news, children in Lainey’s Lambertville neighborhood found a simple but meaningful way to support her family. They organized a lemonade stand called “Lemonade for Lainey,” with signs and a QR code directing people to a fundraiser established for Lainey’s parents and older sister, Kenna.
The children’s effort raised more than $1,000 in online donations, in addition to cash contributions collected at the stand. The family’s larger GoFundMe fundraiser has also received significant support from people wanting to help the Scroggs family during this devastating time.
The Scroggs family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support, saying that although nothing can bring Lainey back, they find comfort in knowing how deeply she was loved and how much her life touched others.
Lainey’s death has brought together classmates, teammates, neighbors, educators, and families who are grieving the loss of a young girl whose life was cut far too short.
Her memory will remain through the friendships she made, the people she encouraged, the community that surrounded her, and the countless memories shared during her 13 years of life.
May Lainey Scroggs’ family, friends, teammates, classmates, and all who loved her find strength and comfort as they mourn this heartbreaking loss.
